A celebratory mood filled the air on September 14th as Malaysia prepared for a long weekend and, more importantly, Malaysia Day. The festivities stretched beyond fireworks and parades into church halls, where Christians across the Klang Valley gathered at Metro Tabernacle A/G to mark the close of NECF’s 40 Days of Prayer and Fast.
This year marked the silver jubilee of NECF’s prayer and fast initiative. Since its beginnings, the annual movement has sought to stir spiritual revival and awakening, uniting churches and believers to fast, pray, and reflect on their walk with God.
Launched in August, the 40-day journey culminated on September 14th. The sound of joy and eager conversations in the hall soon gave way to reverent silence as the crowd sang Negaraku, a fitting celebration of both nation and God.
From a friendly gathering to a praying army
NECF’s story began in response to laws restricting religious freedoms. In Petaling Jaya, 41 church leaders gathered to form a “Friendly Society,” which would later become the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF).
\Within a decade, NECF became part of the Christian Federation of Malaysia, growing from modest meetings at Luther Centre to its own offices in SS2.
At its foundation, NECF was built on four objectives: to foster fellowship among churches (especially in missions, evangelism, Bible teaching, and social action), to spur renewal and revival, to safeguard and spread the Christian faith, and to represent Christians on issues affecting both Church and society.
A turning point came in 2001 when NECF hosted the World Evangelical Fellowship International Consultation on Globalisation.
From there, the leadership embraced a new vision: Transforming the Nation Through the Local Church. The vision called for Christians to be “agents of transformation,” boldly living out their faith.
Out of this came the annual 40 Days of Prayer and Fast, an invitation for believers to sacrifice, seek God, and help build the nation in His image.
This year’s theme was Walking in the Fear of God. The prayer booklet that guided participants through daily devotions defined it clearly: “To walk in the fear of God is to live with an awareness that we are in the presence of a holy, just and Almighty God.”
It is more than reverence; it is an intentional posture of humility, obedience, and dependence, recognising God’s authority over every sphere of life. To walk in His fear is to resist compromise, to pursue holiness, and to live with eternity in view.
As NECF reminded participants, when a nation collectively chooses to honour God in this way, it echoes the promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
This conviction framed the 40 days of prayer. It was not simply about personal devotion, but about seeking God’s mercy and healing for Malaysia – that corruption would give way to integrity, that division would yield to unity, and that the fear of the Lord would shape both governance and daily life.
A Night of Unity, Faith and Flags
The closing event at Metro Tabernacle A/G carried both festivity and reverence. As participants streamed in, the familiar tune of Jalur Gemilang filled the hall.
The evening began with Malaysian classics and a parade of state flags, culminating in the national anthem. On stage, the sight of the Malaysian flag draped before the cross captured NECF’s vision perfectly: a Malaysia united in Christ.
Worship followed in both English and Malay, embodying that unity. A video showcased churches nationwide that had taken part in the 40 days, from shoplots in Gerik to colonial church halls in Tawau. The breadth of participation reflected NECF’s mission: Christians everywhere, united in prayer, striving to walk in the fear of God.
The heart of the evening came through an exhortation by NECF Chairman Rev. Dr. Eu Hong Seng, who unpacked what it means to walk in the fear of God through “eight non-negotiable basics.” These included purpose (“we are here to make disciples”), presence (“seek God”), perseverance (“serve Him even when it’s difficult”), and finally, passion.
“To fear Him means to want to please Him. And wanting to please Him takes passion,” Rev. Dr Eu Hong Seng said.
He urged believers to anchor their lives in the Gospel, looking to God in all seasons. As the night drew to a close, the congregation once again turned to prayer. In small groups, in different languages and styles, they lifted Malaysia’s future to God.
Beyond 40 days: Carrying the fear of the Lord into daily life
The posture of prayer NECF fosters is not confined to 40 days, it is meant to shape a lifetime.
Zi Xuan, 22, recently completed her undergraduate studies and spent several months abroad. For her, NECF has been a way to stay grounded in faith and aware of Malaysia’s spiritual needs.
“While I was visiting a church in New York, they had a map of all the countries where the gospel was restricted. And I noticed Malaysia was on it!” she recalls. “So my prayer is for open hearts to hear and boldness to speak, both in governance and in faith, so that more will come to know the Gospel.”
Joelle, 25, a Sarawak native pursuing postgraduate studies in KL, joined the Prayer and Fast with her church community.
“My prayer is to see revival happen in Malaysia. But it starts from a place of the fear of the Lord within us and a continuous spirit of repentance and chasing after Him.”
For NECF and the thousands who joined in, the 40 Days of Prayer and Fast was more than a spiritual exercise – it was a declaration of faith, unity, and hope for the nation.
But it was also a reminder that prayer and fasting are not confined to a season on the calendar. They are habits that shape believers into people who seek God daily, depend on Him in weakness, and carry His presence into every sphere of life.
The end of 40 days was, in truth, the beginning of something greater: a call to live continually in the fear of the Lord, to intercede for Malaysia with persistence, and to trust that God can transform a nation through hearts that remain anchored in Him. In this way, NECF’s vision stretches beyond one event, toward a lifelong movement of believers who pray, fast, and walk faithfully with God, believing He will hear from heaven and heal the land.
