Faith in Action: 4 Interesting Ways Christians Can Combat Poverty

Among the many directives in the Bible, few are as clear yet often overlooked as the call to care for the poor. Deuteronomy 15:11 reminds us, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbour in your land.” This command, echoed by Jesus in Matthew, raises an important question: how often do we truly care for the poor and those in need around us?

In Malaysia, the reality is stark: the poverty line is defined as a household income below RM2,500, with Malaysiakini estimating that 6.2% of our fellow Malaysians live below this threshold.

Every October, the United Nations recognises the Day for the Eradication of Poverty, urging citizens to take a more active stand against poverty by advocating for social justice.

As Christians, we are called to heed God’s instruction to care for the poor, and we must also embrace our responsibility to love our neighbours—especially those in need.

1. No effort is too small

While it may seem glaringly obvious, the reality is that if poverty is defined by a lack of financial resources, donating to those in need is one of the simplest ways Christians can show compassion. But who should we donate to, and how?

It’s essential to consider supporting trustworthy charities that will be good stewards of our contributions.

Fortunately, Malaysian CARE has been putting faith into action for over 30 years. This Christian NGO is dedicated to uplifting the needy in our society while faithfully upholding the gospel.

Importantly, we shouldn’t limit our contributions to just financial support.

For many young Christians, monetary donations might not be feasible, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help.

Donating our time and effort to organisations like Malaysian CARE can be incredibly impactful. Volunteering offers a powerful way to make a difference in the lives of those in need within our communities. Organisations such as Caring for the Future Malaysia, Bless Ministry, Food for the Hungry International, and many more actively seek volunteers.

2. Do it as a church

Many of us may not realise it, but our churches are overflowing with resources and facilities that can play a vital role in eradicating poverty.

Tackling poverty on our own can feel overwhelming, but with the support of our church community, the journey becomes much more manageable. From organising donation drives and providing educational materials to simply offering a space for gatherings, the potential help our church can provide is limitless.

For those involved in cell groups, youth ministries, and Christian fellowships, these gatherings are fertile ground for grassroots initiatives.

Look for special days or festivities to do something good. Come together and brainstorm ways to make a tangible impact in our communities.

Engaging your pastoral team or Bible study leaders in launching an initiative to fight poverty is another fantastic way to unite your church community around a common purpose.

Together, we can transform our collective resources into meaningful change!

How do our own actions contribute to poverty?

3. Think before we shop – it can stop poverty

When we think about fighting poverty, our focus often shifts to what can be done to alleviate it. However, it’s equally important to look inward and consider how our own actions might contribute to the problem.

While we may not be directly snatching money from anyone’s purse, our purchasing decisions can have a significant impact on global poverty. Many large retailers rely on cheap labour to produce affordable goods, but this often means that the very workers creating these products are living below the poverty line.

No industry exemplifies this issue quite like fashion, as highlighted in a recent Vogue article. While our favourite fashion brands may help us stay stylish, they also play a role in perpetuating poverty for many workers in the supply chain.

Complete ethical consumption for every item that we buy may seem daunting – but it doesn’t mean we should abandon the effort altogether.

Before our next late-night Shopee binge, let’s take a moment to research where our products come from and consider whether our purchases are causing more harm than good.

By making informed choices, we can contribute to a fairer economy and help lift others out of poverty.

4. Care beyond cash

Poverty extends far beyond financial struggles; it can significantly impact a person’s physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being.

When we reach out to those facing difficult financial situations, it’s essential to consider how we can support the whole person—not just their wallet.

Helping someone escape physical poverty is far less meaningful if we overlook their spiritual needs. We must journey alongside those in need, moving beyond mere financial donations to genuinely checking in on their well-being and discovering how we can assist in other important areas of their lives.

The Bible offers profound comfort for those in need. As James 2:5 reminds us, “Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?”

We can share this comforting message with those around us, reminding them that poverty is not a permanent state when they walk in faith with Christ.
