Faith & finals: Thriving spiritually when exams take over

For many, the start of the year marks a fresh beginning, a time for resolutions, renewed motivation, and setting ambitious goals. However, for students across Malaysia, January and February carries a different weight. It’s exam season.

Late-night study sessions, stacks of notes that somehow look foreign, meticulously planned schedules, and last-minute blue pen purchases—exams are often synonymous with stress.

In this high-pressure period, every second seems to count toward that all-important grade.

With so much at stake, sacrifices have to be made. More often than not, it’s our spiritual life that takes the hit.

Whether it’s stepping back from church responsibilities, skipping Bible study, or forgoing time with God altogether, the balance between academic success and spiritual growth can feel like walking a tightrope.

But here’s the good news: You don’t have to walk it alone.

Many Christian students have wrestled with the same struggles and found ways to keep their faith alive, even in the busiest seasons. Here’s their advice for staying anchored in Christ while tackling finals.

Know your why

Why are you studying so hard? Is it to make your parents proud? Secure a place at a top university?

While grades matter, it helps to take a step back and ask: What’s the bigger picture?

For Jia Qian, 23, her “why” went beyond just academic success.

“I saw my studies as an extension of my spiritual life,” she shares. “My mentality was to glorify Him through whatever results I got.”

Jia Qian spent three years pursuing a degree in education. By keeping her focus on God, she found the strength to navigate the demands of her coursework without burning out.

“Above all, my primary responsibility as a student was to glorify God. He didn’t put me here just to get good grades, He put me here to glorify Him!”

Another student, Alyssa, 21, finds encouragement in seeing God’s handiwork in her studies.

“The more I learn about God and His creation, the more I appreciate Him and it motivates me to honour Him,” says Alyssa, who is pursuing a degree in Biomedical Science.

No matter what you study, God’s fingerprints are everywhere. Recognising His presence in your learning can shift your perspective and turn academics into an act of worship.

Have a plan of attack

“Those due dates don’t feel real until you’ve written them down.”

Jia Qian’s course was assignment-heavy, making time management crucial. But she learned that planning every second of the day didn’t guarantee good grades – it just added stress.

Instead, she found that setting clear deadlines helped keep things manageable.

“Once you know your deadlines, everything else kind of falls into place. It makes planning so much easier,” she explains.

One non-negotiable for Jia Qian? Sundays.

“For me, making sure my Sundays were for God was important. By blocking them off in my schedule, I prevented myself from sneaking in extra study hours and ensured I kept my focus on Him,” she said.

Be God-conscious throughout the day

If we schedule our study time, shouldn’t we also plan our time with God?

“It’s important to maintain your devotion, especially in times of stress,” says Jia Qing, 21. However, he admits that during the busy exam period, it becomes quite a challenge.

“It can feel like a routine or a chore when you’ve got other things on your mind, and spending time with God shouldn’t feel like that,” he says.

For Jia Qian, connecting with God happens in the quiet moments between activities.

“It’s important to maintain your devotion, especially in times of stress.” – Jia Qing, 21

“I spend time with Him in between meetings, on drives, during meals alone. Without those silent prayers and quiet spaces, I don’t think I could have made it through.”

The truth is, time with God doesn’t always have to be a long, structured session.

A quick prayer, a worship song, or even meditating on a single verse can keep your heart aligned with Him.

Replace stress with gratitude

Procrastination is the enemy of productivity, and deadlines have a way of creeping up when we least expect it. But Jade, 21, has found a mindset shift that helps her stay on track.

“When things get tough, I remind myself of the privilege I have to learn,” says Jade, an aspiring writer. Recognising education as a gift helps her push past the temptation to slack off.

Her gratitude extends beyond just academics.

Jade, 21 believes that practising gratitude changes our mindset and perspective.

“I think of all the times previously that God has helped me. There are so many obstacles that He has helped me overcome.”

Jade believes that shifting her focus from stress to gratitude puts everything in perspective.

“Gratitude motivates me to try and to try again. Keeping my eyes on Him is where my strength comes from.”

A faith that lasts beyond exams

Jia Qing, now in his third year of university, offers a refreshing perspective on the academic grind.

“My next exam is two hours long. My time with God is eternal.”

He’s blunt about his priorities.

“When we’re young, it feels like everything hinges on our grades. But in the big picture, this is just a small part of life. My identity isn’t in being a first-class student, it’s in being a child of God.”

That doesn’t mean Jia Qing slacks off.

“I’m not saying don’t study at all! We can definitely glorify God through academics. But remembering Christ’s sacrifice keeps me from putting my grades above Him.”

A simple but powerful habit helps him stay focused.

“Listening to worship songs while studying reminds me what really matters. A good grade might help me in the future, but it’s nothing compared to the eternal life Christ has given me.”

Faith & Finals Can Coexist

Balancing faith and studies isn’t about choosing one over the other – it’s about making space for God in the midst of it all.

Exams are important, but they don’t define you. Christ does.

So as you tackle your next test, remember: Keep your eyes on Him, and He will be your strength. Whether it’s through prayer, worship, or simply finding joy in learning, you can honour God even in the busiest seasons.

Because in the end, an A is great – but a heart set on Him is far greater.
