5 questions with Grace Wong, 20, Scripture Union’s youngest staff member

At 20 years old, Grace is the youngest serving staff member of Scripture Union (SU) in Malaysia. We recently sat down with her to find out what led her into the ministry.

Hey, Grace! Thanks for sharing your story with us. How did you come to know Jesus?

I grew up in a Christian family, my parents are church leaders so I went through Sunday School, youth, all of that. But as a second-generation Christian, church was more of an extra school subject for me. I had the knowledge of who God is, but not much beyond that.

I was 16 when I owned my faith. Two weeks after my family relocated to Johor Bahru, I met with a near-death accident. I was on my bicycle when I felt someone turn my bike handles, and realised I had almost gotten hit by a car. But because I swerved, I hit a lamppost and was thrown into a drain. I survived with a fracture and some broken teeth. Through that ordeal, I realised that being able to live was a second chance by God, and I began asking questions.

Who is God? Is He real? And then the pandemic hit, and I had all of the lockdown to discover God for myself. I couldn’t deny Him anymore.

That’s amazing. Can you share with us how you ended up in Scripture Union (SU)?

I had been pondering if I wanted to pursue full-time ministry in the future so when the internship with SU was made available, I thought it would be a good experience. It was either this or working in cafes, and I thought SU would benefit me more.

I also looked up to my youth leaders and thought how they served was very meaningful. SU was interesting because it involved working with schools and young people. I was an intern for seven months and decided to join as a staff-in-training in January 2024. I’m part of the Children Ministry team, but also have the opportunity to shadow other teams.

I do have plans to pursue tertiary education in the future.

What do you believe is your calling in this season of life?

For this one year, I believe it is a ministry with the younger generation and to be a living testimony. It’s not just talking, but walking the talk. We live out what we believe in. I’m also still discovering my purpose for the next season.

Our (Scripture Union Peninsular Malaysia) current mission is Impacting 1 Million students with God’s Word. Our aim is to connect with younger Christians, students and youths through the Bible. God’s Word is the foundation for all we do and it is alive; so that is the guiding framework for all of our activities.

How would you encourage others your age to discover their God-given purpose and step out in faith and obedience?

First, it’s important to own your faith. It’s quite useless to tell others to serve without actually being convicted. When you own your faith, God will reveal His plans for you gradually. Talk to people around you — parents, church leaders and friends.

If you have the desire to enter ministry, it’s never too early or too late to start. The door is always open. When I first decided to do this, my friends had a lot of questions. But God worked in and through my friends; even my non-Christian friend was supportive.

Everyone has their field of ministry; it may be within a church or Christian organisation, or you could be in the marketplace. Whether you’re working in corporate or full-time, what matters is obedience to God’s commands and being a faithful servant.

How can Scripture Union support others like you to grow in God’s Word and live to bless their communities?

One of the Scripture Union programs that really impacted me was the internship programme. It helped me to grow deeper in Christ, explore what a life of full-time ministry looks like. There’s also a lot of understanding and love among the team, which is a great reflection of how Christ has called us to be.

I see a Christ-like character; when one is down, the whole team steps up to cover for them and when one does well, the whole team celebrates. It’s not competitive energy driving us. When we go out into schools, it’s learning how to give and bless. And in camps, when youths come to talk to you, it’s really just sitting down, understanding them and seeing things from their point of view.

The next intake for internship is July-September 2024, so if you’re a Bible-believing Christian having a gap period after SPM /college/university or thinking about next steps, if you’re willing to learn and explore, apply to join us!

Scripture Union is an inter-denominational ministry aims to make God’s good news known to children, youths and their families; and encourage people of all ages to meet God daily through the Bible and prayer; so that they may come to personal faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, grow in Christian maturity, become committed church members and servants of a world in need.
