Struggling but not alone: Finding Christian counselling in Malaysia

Life is full of ups and downs. As Christians, we believe in the promise of eternal life and the hope found in Jesus Christ. Yet, stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma are part of the human experience and can affect even the strongest believers.

According to Malaysia’s Ministry of Health, nearly 1 in 3 Malaysians above 16 years old experience some form of mental health problem in their lifetime.

So, what does this mean for Christians? How do we navigate mental and emotional struggles while holding onto our faith? For many, Christian counselling offers a compassionate and faith-centered approach to healing.

What is Christian Counselling?

To understand Christian counselling, it’s important to first define counselling itself. At its core, counselling provides a safe, professional space where individuals can process emotional and psychological challenges with the guidance of a trained counsellor.

Dr. Edmund Ng, founding president of the National Association of Christian Counselors Malaysia and the Asia Christian Counseling Association, highlights a key difference between secular and Christian counselling:

“Secular counselling is based on the science of psychology, focusing on meeting basic psychological needs for human wellness. Christian counselling, however, integrates modern psychology with the Word of God, where Scripture is the ultimate authority and the foundation of understanding human nature.”

Dr. Edmund Ng explains that while secular counselling relies on psychology, Christian counselling combines it with God’s Word – letting Scripture guide our understanding of human nature.

Patrick Cheng, a licensed and registered counsellor in Kuala Lumpur, explains that Christian counselling goes beyond addressing emotional and mental distress. “The goal of the Christian counselor is to help a person discover how to love God with all his heart, mind, and soul,” he said.

In other words, Christian counselling not only helps individuals navigate mental and emotional struggles but also fosters spiritual growth. As Avis Ng, counselling dean at Bible College Malaysia (BCM), puts it:

“As much as we attend to our physical wounds and complications, psychological wounds are equally vital to our survival and health.”

Why Consider Christian Counselling?

You might wonder, “Is my struggle serious enough to seek help?” Many people hesitate to pursue counselling, believing it is only for those with “serious problems.” However, mental health professionals affirm that no struggle is too small.

According to Dr Edmund, counselling can address any issue affecting your thoughts, emotions, behaviours, or relationships, including:

  • Stress and burnout
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Parenting challenges
  • Relationship struggles
  • Trauma or PTSD
  • Grief and loss
  • Faith and spiritual doubts

Drawing from Jeremiah 17:9 – “The heart is deceitful above all things”, Patrick Cheng highlights how counselling can help individuals go deeper in self-examination. “Counselling can also help us uncover underlying causes of unhealthy behaviour, as we are sometimes unaware of our true motivations,” he said.

Avis Ng encourages Christians to seek help sooner rather than later: “Reach out when you or your loved ones face challenges. No struggle is too small to be heard.”

Christian counselling is especially valuable because it provides a space to explore mental health concerns through the lens of faith.

Research published in the American Psychologist established a link between an active spiritual life and reduced risk of long-term diseases2. This indicates that a healthy spiritual life might positively impact both mental and physical well-being.

For believers, counseling can be an opportunity to experience both psychological healing and spiritual renewal.

What to look for in a Christian counsellor

If you’re considering Christian counselling, how do you find the right counsellor? Experts suggest paying attention to the following factors:

Faith and Maturity: Dr Edmund says, “A Christian counselor should preferably be a Christian who is rather mature in the faith and his life is of good standing.”

Emotional Safety: Ms. B, an experienced counsellor in Kuala Lumpur, suggests asking yourself: “Do I feel increasingly safe sharing my thoughts and feelings?” If you feel judged or disrespected, it may be time to seek someone else.

Qualifications and Training: Ensure your counsellor has professional credentials. Ms. B advises: “You should be able to have a frank conversation about qualifications. If a counsellor is hesitant to discuss their credentials, consider it a red flag.”

Compatibility: Counselling is a collaborative process, and a good Christian counsellor will walk alongside you while respecting both your autonomy and your faith journey. As Patrick puts it, “Finding a counsellor is like trying on a pair of shoes – you know it when it fits.”

Christian vs. secular counselling: What’s the difference?

It’s important to note that Christian counselling and secular counselling are not in opposition. In fact, both approaches can be beneficial, depending on your needs.

Ms. B, who is a Christian trained in secular counselling, frames the decision with a practical analogy: “If you hurt your knee, would you choose a doctor based on their faith or their expertise? It’s the same with mental health—qualifications and skills matter.”

She explains that while her Christian faith informs her practice, she draws on established psychological methods to help clients.

For Christian clients, conversations naturally include questions like, “Where is God in all this?” Faith becomes an integrated part of the healing process.

Seeking counselling is not a sign of weak faith, it is an act of wisdom and courage. Healing is a journey, and no one should walk it alone. Christian counselling, whether through a faith-based or secular framework, can provide the compassionate guidance you need.
